About the Center

The Union City Board of Education created the José Martí Center for Cultural Education at José Martí Middle School so that students and the Union City community can explore the geography, arts and music of the many cultures within our community and the world. In and around the José Martí campus, artists, poets and musicians will bring culture into the classrooms and group spaces, enriching the learning climate.

Cultural education gives students the opportunity to feel good about themselves and to experience the satisfaction of a job well done. The arts provide an outlet for children, parents and community alike to express their home cultures through dance, music, theater, cuisine, poetry, writing and art. The goal is not just to teach children about their roots, but to help them use their roots to learn in the school environment.

Throughout the school year, the Center for Cultural Education will bring in numerous performers, artists, poets, writers and musicians to conduct cultural programming that puts the vibrant culture of our community at the center of students' educational journeys.
